VIDEO: Promises Made, Promises Kept

I know what it’s like growing up in public housing. I’ve witnessed the poverty, crime and challenges. I understand the plight of single moms, like my own mother struggling to provide on their own. That’s why I ran for Senate, to face those challenges head on and fight for opportunity and hope.

Too many in our community are not getting the education they deserve, a wage they can live on, access to healthcare, and they are not being provided the tools they need to pursue success and happiness. In 2012, I made a promise to fight for hope and opportunity.

I have kept that promise. We have secured hundreds of thousands of dollars to build and revitalize the former Boulevard Homes Housing Project and create Renaissance West putting in a new school, an early childhood development center, workforce housing and affordable housing for seniors. Partnering with Central Piedmont Community College, we’re creating a brighter future for our community.

This is just the beginning. We have pushed “Ban the Box,” helping those with criminal records get jobs and to incentivize businesses to hire disadvantaged applicants. We successfully raised the age so children are not being tried as adults. Just this year, we got a 9% pay raise for Charlotte Mecklenburg School teachers.

Those are just some of the efforts I have led as your State Senator, but we still have work to do, and I need your help. On May 8th, I’m asking you, your friends and neighbors to vote for me, Joel Ford, and together we can move Charlotte forward.
