Joel Ford is a three-term Democratic North Carolina State Senator representing District 38 in Mecklenburg County. Senator Ford has worked alongside a Republican supermajority fighting vigorously for his constituents for six years. He believes the divisive rhetoric of politicians today threaten the foundation of our democracy, and progress for Democrats in the statehouse depends on our leaders’ competencies in civil discourse and debate.

Born and raised by a single mother in public housing, Senator Ford has an unwavering respect for women and minorities who are often among those most in need and hardest to serve. He has worked tirelessly as a volunteer and substitute teacher in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system. He has started and owned various small businesses and has a passion for empowering entrepreneurs. He has dedicated his life to community service previously serving as Chairman of the Charlotte Housing Authority, Chairman of the Mecklenburg County Democratic Party and Board of Directors of the Renaissance West Community Initiative.

Senator Ford is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, Leadership North Carolina and the Institute of Political Leadership. He is currently an executive consultant for a behavioral health company, married to Deborah Lane Ford, and they have one daughter, Noelle. Senator Joel Ford is running for re-election to the North Carolina State Senate in 2018.
