Born and raised by a single mother in public housing, Joel Ford has overcome every day obstacles throughout his life with hard work and education. Joel was born in Charlotte, NC and is a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He is also a graduate of Leadership North Carolina Class XI and 2009 class of the Institute of Political Leadership.

Joel first went into public service as an executive for Waste Management of Atlanta where he would later use his experience and entrepreneurial skills to open his own waste management company in Charlotte. He has worked as a substitute teacher in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System and served as Chairman of the Charlotte Housing Authority.

An entrepreneur at heart, Joel has started and owned several other companies including a barbershop in Eastland Mall and restaurant in the University area. Joel’s experience in business fuels his passion for small business development where he believes opportunity exists to improve Charlotte’s economy by supporting and empowering entrepreneurs.

Joel Ford is currently a health executive in behavioral healthcare and represents Mecklenburg County’s District 38 in the North Carolina State Senate. He is married to Deborah Lane Ford and they have one daughter, Noelle. Joel is committed to the community with a long service record including:
