As a graduate of both our public school system and the public N.C. A&T University, Joel understands the importance and value of public education. He knows we must protect and properly fund our public schools so every North Carolinian at every age has access to a quality education.
Joel believes strongly we need to keep politics out of education and allow teachers to do what they do best. We need to work with educators, administrators, private industry, stakeholders, parents and students to help determine the optimal mix of subject matter taught. We also must determine the optimal mix of public/private financing and delivery of educational services.
Joel wants to equip teachers with the tools they need and the pay/benefits they deserve. We can’t expect teachers to provide quality education when we don’t value their hard work.
From K-12 to community colleges to colleges/universities, Joel knows a strong public education is a selling tool for attracting and retaining vibrant businesses. Companies need to ensure their employees’ children have a quality K-12 experience, need to be able to train their workforce at community colleges and should be able to recruit talent from North Carolina higher education institutions.
Joel serves on the Myers Park Traditional Elementary School Leadership Team and was part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools/Charlotte Chamber of Commerce Educating Change initiative underwritten by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He is actively involved in his daughter Trinity’s public-school education at Myers Park Traditional Elementary School.
